Wow 300 posts! I feels like it was only yesterday when I had my 200th blog post giveaway… actually no it doesn’t lol.
I started this blog as sort of geek release. I don’t get to talk about the kind of awesomery I blog about with the majority of my friends, just really my brother and a friend or two. And
although geekdom has a lot of women in it, this subculture is still male dominated so I wanted to represent for us girls who are geeks, talk about the things I love and share the geeky goodies I find with you all. But fanboys don’t run off! This blog is called Girl Gone Geek but it isn’t just for girls at all, even though I may talk about how I daydream about The Doctor, Han Solo or Captain Malcolm Reynolds, but I’m sure you do too!
Girl Gone Geek Blog will turn 1 on May 27th and I can’t believe it’s almost been a year! GGGB continues to grow with over 500 Facebook likes and over 1,300 twitter followers. THAT’S INSANE! I still flip out when I think about that all of that. The success of my baby (this blog) is all thanks to you and your support and can’t wait to see what the future holds!
The Contest:
To celebrate #300 I wanted to have another contest. It will start from today and end next Sunday, April 17th. I’ve teamed up with the talented graphic designer and illustrator Ian Leino. Many of you know him from Tee Fury fame where he is currently the top grossing designer, and for a very good reason! What will you win? Any one item from his shop! All of the images on this post are some of the products from his online store, check it out and see what you might win!
HOW TO WIN:
- The winner will be chosen on Sunday, April 17th, I will use randomizer.org to pick the winner.

I have way too many sci-fi and fantasy shows to list the all, so I will list them by category:
Movies: I am a kaiju fan (Godzilla, Gamara, etc). I also watch Star Wars with my husband (even though he’s a bigger fan of it than I am).
TV (American Television): Star Trek (any and all the different incarnations) and Mythbusters (ok, that’s more science fact, but it has great sci-fi eliments
TV (international): Doctor Who (both the classic and 2.0> versions), anime (Sailor Moon, Powerpuff Girls Z, and almost anything on YouTube), and Ultraman.
I also read a lot of manga (I live in the manga section of Barnes & Nobel part time..LOL), and I use to do a lot of cosplaying when I had time.
I cannot choose just one… so here are some from each category!
Film: Inception, Titan A.E., The Island, Star Wars
TV Show: X-Files, Fringe, Doctor Who, Star Trek
Book: Dune, The Hot-Zone, 1984, Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy
Comic: The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, xkcd
And if you honestly have to ask why I like these then you probably haven’t seen/read them yet. With the possible exception of Titan A.E. which was a childhood favorite for me. XD
I’m a die hard Doctor Who fan and am anxiously awaiting the start of the new season. And also completely jealous that you got to got to the Doctor Who signing! I love the fact that science fiction (of all types) can manage to be dramatic, and suspenseful and still be funny and not take itself too seriously.

I have way too many favorites to count, but I love Doctor Who, any distopia book, and anything Joss Whedon :P
Twitter: TbLeighski
At the moment Doctor Who wins, no contest. As for the list:
Firefly (essentially anything Whedon)
Star Trek NG
Sandman comics (really anything by Neil Gaiman)
@HotDorkChick (and I’ll email you my name and such)
Firefly. I love all of Joss Whedon’s works but I think the casting and acting were amazing. Nathan Fillion is such a terrific actor and I’ll admit, I had a thing for Kaylee.

What is your favorite science fiction film, TV show, book or comic and why? This is really a hard one. I am going to go with the Original Star Wars Trilogy. I was raised on many geek things and continue to discover new media, but Star Wars is something that I love just as much now as I did when I was little. One of the few movies that I can watch over and over. If I watch A New Hope, then I have to finish it through the other 3 movies. My entire family are fans as well, and I do mean my entire family. My grandmother (may she rest in piece) was a fan, my cousins named their dog Ewak, and I was lucky enough to find (and marry) a man who loves the series just as much.

I would have to say my favorite sci-fi film of all time is probably The Andromeda Strain, there are many that I like but this is one film that I revisit at least once a year and have done so for many many years! I think the premise is a good one and one that we could easily see happen during our lifetime and I think it is presented in a very realistic and chilling manner. After all it seems that the scientists believe that almost everything on earth is killing us, from bacon and eggs to meat and potatoes so I’m guessing there would also be a lot of bad stuff floating around in the vastness of space also!
My favorite Sci fi movie is Star Trek, the one by JJ Abrahms because I think it is well-crafted, entertaining, and done by the creator of LOST which is my all time favorite show! Plus, the casting is terrific and I love the idea of old Spock meeting young Spock.
Definitely Firefly and Empire Strikes Back… Firefly wins in the end though based on casting and pure likability of the majority of the actors.
For me, my favorite Sci-Fi TV show would have to be, without a doubt Dr. Who, it’s a favorite of a lot of people, but for me, it was my first exposure to Sci-Fi which I still enjoy today. I was about 10 when my step dad took me to a Dr. Who convention, because we would always watch the old episodes, taped on beta, of course.
I fell in love with Tom Baker and the show, and it’s still a show I can enjoy more than 10 years later, and I feel like it has an appeal even to those who don’t generally enjoy Sci-Fi

My favorite movie is Star Wars, for sure. TV is definitely Firefly. I like a lot of books, but few comics. The Walking Dead is an excellent series, as is Freak Angels.

My favorite SciFi story is “Dark They Were and Golden Eyed”
by by Ray Bradbury.
My favorite sci fi show has to be Firefly. It was so beautifully done and it has created a community of Browncoats who are just awesome! And their dedication sparked the movie! But going for movies Lotr wins for me, its epic and so completely true to the books!

Hi, I found you BECAUSE of Ian Leino!
To answer the question….awe man, just one thing! I love Star Trek:TOS and the new movie because I have a giant CRUSH on Spock(both Leonard Nimoy and Zachary Quinto.)
It took me forever to finally read it but Dune is one of the most amazing things I’ve ever read. It makes me wish I was a Bene Gesserit the Weirding Way is something I wish I had. I also love Firefly and just wore my Serenity Sake shirt yesterday. Oh Jayne, your manly craziness gets me every time I watch.

My favorite scifi of all time is Stargate SG1 for oh so many reasons. The first is the brilliance of the writers. Almost all the episodes are fantastic and in 10 years you become so attached to the characters, you feel like you know them. I love all the cheesiness, Richard Dean Anderson is amazing. So is Michael Shanks. He’s such a great actor! And his character rocks. I think Stargate definitely deserved it’s 10 year run! It’s awesome!
Sunshine (with CIllian Murphy)
Stargate SG-1 / Doctor Who/Anything Joss Whedon
The Martian Chronicles by R. Bradbury
Anything Spiderman and the WoW comics
I can’t even begin explaining why I love these^ They just make my heart flutter and provide me with happiness :)

Doctor Who wins hand down. It’s my favorite show of any genre. There are just too many reasons why it is awesome to list.
For Books, I’d have to say the Dune series. I have re-read it a million times and it never gets old. The book just sucks you in.
For movies, I’d have to say maybe Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan or A Clockwork Orange.
Oh, so much I love! In no particular order….Firefly, Tank Girl, Serenity, Space Hunter, Star Trek classics, Dr. Who (old and new), BSG (old and new), 2001: A Space Odyssey, Star Wars, Soylent Green, Donnie Darko, Blade Runner, Nausicaa: Valley of the Wind, Terminator, Earth 2, The Fifth Element, Mad Max, The Andromeda Strain, Logan’s Run, Babylon 5, Caprica, The 4400, Rock and Rule.
Why I like sci-fi… well, growing up it was one of the few genres where the ladies were as tough as the men so it provided great role models. It also placed value on learning and constantly questioning reality. Sci-fi makes it cool to be smart. And of course, it provides wonderful stories that allow escape from the regular day-to-day to distant planets, other-worldly creatures, and turns reality on it’s side. Who wouldn’t love that?!?!

My favorite sci fi TV show is Battlestar Galactica because of the quality of the show (writing, acting, direction, etc.) An actor/playwright friend of mine loves the show, and he does not watch other sci fi TV or read any sci fi.
I’m Kim L. Kinsey in Facebook.
My absolute favorite sci-fi movie is Back to the Future. Everything about that movie, from the humor, to the story is pretty much perfection in my book.
…
What.
HOW DO I PICK?!
How do I even pick just ONE from each category?!
Okay, let’s see…
Film: I’ve always loved Blade Runner. Always. “Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?” is a marvelous book, but this is one of the very few movies that I consider better than the book. It’s a beautiful film, and the story is complex and compelling. I’ll never get tired of it.
TV show: I am not ashamed to admit that I can’t pick just one. I’ve been a Whovian almost since the day I was born, and it just keeps getting better and better. I started watching Doctor Who with Tom Baker as the Doctor–he was my first, and my favorite, but I really am enjoying the new series. Tennant makes me laugh so much. (Sarah Jane came back! That made me happy.) Also: proud Browncoat! Loved Firefly, still not sure about Serenity even after all these years. But that’s not exactly a TV show, anyway.
Book: Ender’s Game, hands down. I read somewhere that Orson Scott Card only wrote Ender’s Game so he could write Speaker for the Dead, but I don’t love that book half as much as I love Ender’s Game.
Comic: Although I still wonder if this isn’t quite the right genre for the book, I’ve read Watchmen so many times and loved it each time. People always refer to it as “science fiction,” but I think that’s too limiting of a description. Granted, a genre called “post-modernistic social commentary on everything in the world, oh, and also superheroes” doesn’t exactly roll off the tongue.

So….Question: What is your favorite science fiction film, TV show, book or comic and why? (If you happened not like any thing sci-fi then lie to me lol)
If I truly answered this question your blog would explode in brilliant colors of Tardis blue or Vader black!!! Favorite (paces around while rubbing chin) science fiction film, TV show, book or comic and why? I’ve got it!!! Brilliant infact….
It all started on a cold winter night. No creature was a stirring as I was being dumped by my boyfriend. And as I walked out of that dismal rat trap of a house I saw something spectacular. I saw… David Tennants hair. Before I could inquire about this fabulous man I was swept out of the house. Fast forward a couple weeks and I remembered the man with the HUGE hair standing next to this red head. Something drew me to them. And my search began to find…the DOCTOR! And when I did I exploded into all the seasons. Watched series 1 and 2 in the blink of an eye. And shared every tear, adventure and laugh in series 3, 4, and 5.
But what makes my love for this show so great? Well…clothes…I have enough DW shirts to do a runway show for hours. Different shirts…different designs. And secondly…I went and took my love for DW to England!!! Packed my bags and went for months logging and exploring this brilliant show. And I loved every second. Loved every building I recognized and I loved every face I saw (especially John Barrowman’s *wink*wink*). And all because of that spikey haired man on tv. And now every trip, every book, every dvd collection since 1964 happened by accident. On a cold and bleary night…came the greatest present. A search for a man called The Doctor.
P.S. FB name appears as Ruth I. Jimenez….I’m the one in luscious green!
There’s so many favorites, I’m not sure I can even list them all! Books – Orson Scott Card “Ender’s Game” is my all time favorite, but I also loved Gene Wolfe’s “The Book of the Long Sun”, Larry Niven’s Ringworld Trilogy, and John Steakley’s “Armor”. Movies – original Star Wars trilogy, Serenity, new Star Trek and even-numbered old Star Treks. TV – Firefly because it was so well done and filled a void on TV, and Dr. Who (Tom Baker) because I would watch it with my dad and it was great to be geeky and have inside jokes no one else got. Hope that’s not too much!
If I had to pick my favorite Sci-fi at this moment in time I would pick Battlestar Galatica(new version). The old one is pretty funny to watch, but the new one has everything you could ever ask for. Great storyline, great acting, great writing, great characters, great action scenes. Everything in Battlestar just made sense for the universe, and the very last scene in the very last episode, everything came together all of a sudden. It related back to us as humans. It was just awesome! And I felt completely satisfied. I loved every minute of it. I’m trying to be as vague as possible for those that might not have seen it yet. If you haven’t, check it out!
There a so many to choose from but I would have to Doctor Who, It always new, and keeps me on the edge of my seat…
What is your favorite science fiction film, TV show, book or comic and why?
Favourite of anything sci fi for me…. DOCTOR WHO! Why, because i’s brilliant that’s why? But seriously I love the way it works on so many levels. It’s fun, there’s monsters, but there are huge themes being dealt with in this series about people (no matter what race.. and by this I mean non-human too :P). There is such deep emotion and difficult decisions to make and that is why I love it.
I will email details! :D
Doctor. It has to be him. Or rather, the series. I’ve been following Doctor Who since David Tennant’s reign, and have slowly been catching up with the older versions. There are many reasons why I love to watch the series; one of them is how original and suspenseful every episode is. You never know what to expect; the Doctor might not even be able to save the day in the end! It’s great to have a show with such an eccentric do-gooder as the main character. There’s something wonderfully ironic about having a man who’s outside social boundaries out to save society. Plus Gillian is really hot, and somehow more bearable than any of the other companions I’ve seen. Can’t wait for the new season on Easter!!

My favourite is Doctor Who because I’m a little bit in love with David Tennant & also because the show is so exciting & fun. It is a great show to watch with kids or even just big kids. My favourite episode is that scary weeping angels one. EEP!
Wait, you want me to pick just ONE?!?! I don’t know if I can do that…so, I’m going to do what others have done and submit some from all categories.
Film – Star Wars, Jurassic Park, Blade Runner, Terminator
TV Show – Doctor Who, Stargate (Both SG-1 and Atlantis), Star Trek: The Original Series; Firefly
Book – Dune, Ender’s Game, Starship Troopers; Kindred
And so many others! The reason I love all of these (with the exception of Doctor Who) is that I grew up with all of them. I’ve been a sci-fi geek since my cousins showed me Jurassic Park when I was five expecting me to be scared out of my mind; instead I fell in love with the movie and the genre.
I’ve only just recently come across Doctor Who, but fell in love with it pretty much instantly. Seen all of the new series, and have started on the classics. Eagerly awaiting the new series!
I love the genre so much I even took a class in college about it, “Race & Ethnicity in Science Fiction. It was a small class, only 12 of us, but everyday was a total sci-fi fest. I’ll stop talking now. I’ve said too much.
Done all the above steps!

Star Wars is my favorite sci-fi. Granted, Phantom of the Menace and Attack of the Clones weren’t exactly worthwhile, the whole series and story itself gets me pumped.
Major Whovian over here! SO excited for series 6 to premiere! <3

Thanks, and congrats!
My all time favorite TV show(s)have to be Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis. I grew up watching these and It’s really hard to put into words how amazing they are. The shows are just full of action, adventure, mythology and the camaraderie between the characters is just awesome. SG-1 went for 10 years and by the end, the cast was one big family and it really shows onscreen. I also love how it is intelligent sci-fi. They don’t dumb anything down for the audience. It’s just an amazing show. I also just recently got into Doctor Who. I am absolutely in LOVE with that show :-) Can’t wait for the new season!

I have 2 favorites – Firefly and Star Wars. I really can’t pick just one. I would run confused into a corner and cry if I had to.
As played out as this will sound, I’d have to go with Firefly. Something about the universe and the stories and characters really reached out and grabbed me. It was like Trigun, Outlaw Star, and Cowboy Bebop all got together with Joss and made a live action series. A close runner up though would probably be Dr. Who. The funniest thing about these two series though, is that I was such a snob when I was younger and didn’t really think I’d like either of these shows. How wrong I was….

So you want to know my favorites, hmm? Well better pull up a chair ’cause this might take a while!
Movies: I first got into scifi when I saw the original Star Wars trilogy at age 13. Then the new trilogy then the Star Trek films then Serenity…and, well, you probably get the picture.
Television: There are a lot of different shows I watch from the scifi genre. A few of those are Star Trek, Doctor Who, Firefly and the three biggest Stargate shows. I can’t really pick out of those because they’re all so amazing.
I’m luckily not alone in my obsessions thanks to some awesome friends who have either gotten me into or I’ve gotten into various fandoms. We have parties and cosplay together and go to conventions and it’s just a ton of fun!
I could watch Dr Horribles Sing-Along Blog on a daily basis, Joss Whedon is pretty much a genius, and Firefly, man Iove everything about the series, I even liked serenity! I have a huge crush on Nathan Fillion .. I even like Castle because he is so amazing!
I found you cause Of Ian, he’s an amazing artist

I was raised on a diet of Dr Who (cybermice and yetis haunted my dreams!) and Golden age SF. The renewed Dr Who from RTD and Steve Moffat are excellent light entertainment, and for books I’d also have to lean towards some of the UK authors: Iain M. Banks in particular. It’s been great over the past 10-15 years see the resurgence of the Space Opera sub-genre!
Cheers,
G.
My favorite sf tv show is “Babylon 5,” because it is *so* well written, *so* intelligent, *so* rewarding to the careful viewer…and features a super hot, sexy, brainy Narn!
So many favorites, but Doctor Who gets my pick. I appreciate that I can watch most any episode several times in a row and not tire of it.

Films: Star Wars, Serenity, Lord of the Rings, Fifth Element, and Star Trek
Shows: Doctor Who, Firefly, Star Trek TNG, and X-Files
Books: War of the Worlds, Logan’s Run, 1984, Fahrenheit 451, Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, and tons of books that are more fantasy than sci-fi
It is so hard to choose just one favorite, but if it wasn’t for The Hobbit I may never have discovered my love of sci-fi and fantasy. Currently, however, my favorite has to be Doctor Who… I am even getting the Seal of Rassilon as a tattoo tomorrow. I can watch all of the episodes over and over again and I love that it is getting my kids into sci-fi. My 3 year old is asking for a Doctor Who birthday party!
