I featured Marques Cannons Pin-Up Video Game Girls back in August 2010 before I started Picture of the Week and I knew that one day I’d have to bring them back and feature his Video Girls Series again because I loved them so much! Marques is also the first artist I interviewed for PotW and I hope to interview more of the artists I feature whenever possible. Kratos is definitely my favorite reinterpretation!
Interview with Artist Marques Cannons
Age: 28
Hometown/location: Sarasota, FL
When did you first start drawing? Ever since I could remember. Usually on walls in crayon though.
What made you want to take your artistic skills to the next level? It was just something I’ve always loved to do. I’ve known since pre-school that this was probably what I wanted to do for the rest of my life.
What inspires you to create art? Everything really. Video games, nature, movies, comics, other art. Anything that catches my eye might spark an idea or make me want to try something out on the page/screen.
How did you come up with the idea to reimagine video game characters as female pinups? I’ve always liked to redesign characters for fun and I thought it would be a pretty good challenge to take it another step further and re-imagine all of these famous video game characters as female. It forced me to go further than just redesigning the outfit.
What are your favorite: video games, video game characters, and console? This changes all the time, but a few of my favorites are definitely Hulk: Ultimate Destruction just for the pure fun and freedom that game gave you, God Hand for how awesome that fight system was, Shadow of the Colossus for the amazing experiences fighting the Colossi, and I’m a big fighting game fan so I’m loving Marvel Vs Capcom 3 at the moment. Favorite video game character at the moment would probably be Bayonetta just for how crazy and wacky and over the top she is (I also love that game). Even though my Xbox 360 gets the most play right now, I’m console neutral.
What are some of your favorite artists (fine art, pop art, comic book, etc.)? I’ve always loved Alphonse Mucha. His art style was almost like comic book before comic books and I love the intricate art nouveau trimmings and designs. Other artists I’m in to include IppeiGyoubu, LeSean Thomas, Frank Frazetta, Hyung Tae Kim, Jae Lee, Steve McNiven, Leinil Yu, and 100s of others really.
Do you have any other geeky obsessions? If so what? It would be easier to name the ones I don’t have! The biggest though are probably video games and comics. I really love sci-fi tv and movies too.
Where can we find you in the web? You can find me posting new art on my tumblr (http://marquescannon.tumblr.com/) or check out a lot of my stuff on deviantart (http://guitaratomik.deviantart.com/) [and buy shirts with my artwork on RedBubble.com].

I quite like MegaGirl! That just might be inspiration for my next cosplay outfit.
