Girl Gone Geek Interview with Firth and Farquharson of House of the Fickle Queen:
Can you tell us a little big about yourself?
FIRTH: Most of the time known by the name of ‘Clobo’ or ‘Bows’, but I guess you would call me… genus, humanus… Chloe; or even Her Imperial Highness, Her Grace, Her Excellency, Her Royal Majesty, Madame Fickle. I am obsessed with books and if I had my own world, the books would be nothing but pictures, and then everything is left to your imagination. I am entirely bonkers. But I’ll tell you a secret. All the best people are; and my Curiosity often leads me to trouble. If I could adapt the world to my own, everything would be nonsense. Nothing would be what it is because everything would be what it isn’t. And contrary-wise; what it is it wouldn’t be, and what it wouldn’t be, it would. You see?
FARQUHARSON: Well after that I guess I’ll keep my answer short. You can call me by one of three names: Frogmella Farquharson (just Farquharson is fine), Darcy Vega (secret identity) or Hall (“real life” surname). I am a self-confessed freestyle baker, super villain in training, queen of the sky castle, unicorn hunter, nail polish tyrant, chaotic designer, technology addict, wise owl, couture tramp, book fiend and consumer of popular culture.
What is House of the Fickle Queen Shops origin story and how long have you been making jewelry?
FARQUHARSON: Well around 6 months ago Firth and I decided we were sick of paying out our hard earned cash for cheaply made but unusual jewelry. So we did some investigation, got some pliers, superglue and jump rings and just taught ourselves from there. The ‘House of the Fickle Queen’ name came from weeks and weeks of brainstorming. Farquharson HQ was littered with scraps of paper with words on that we liked and we just whittled it down from there. We were almost called the Sleazy Octopus Emporium (which would also have been a rad name and will probably end up being used for a side project). Since then we’ve been selling on Etsy, doing craft fairs locally and coercing our friends & family into buying our stuff!
FIRTH: Charm Bracelets are where ‘House of the Fickle Queen’ started from, so they are always going to some of my favourite pieces to make. I am very keen on little trinkets, and putting lots of different things that don’t necessarily fit together, and then turn out to be something spectacular. I also do love the laser cut items, using the machine and being able to cut and make whatever you want, into either a necklace, earrings, ring, hair accessories is a very exciting process. The possibilities are endless; I am never out of ideas for new stock.
FARQUHARSON: My favourite things to make are the pop culture cameos. Nothing pleases me more than trapping my beloved TV/Film characters under glass. I treat it like a science experiment. I think the ‘Twin Peaks’ Micro Cameo earrings were a high point. Although I did just make some Sweet Valley High and Point Horror book covers into charms for earrings and bracelets so I think I might be veering off onto that as a new exciting tangent.
FIRTH: This has to be something to do with me designing a ‘SHITTHEBED’ laser cut necklace amongst a classroom full on kids. Their faces were a picture.
FARQUHARSON: I once glued my finger to my face by accident. True story.
What do you geek out for?
FIRTH: Mostly Disney associated things. I love anything interesting and slightly bizarre, including all things silly and complete nonsense.
FARQUHARSON: Creeping Jesus, what don’t I geek out for would probably be a better question! I’ll try keep this brief….Mae West, Bees, Hunter S. Thompson, Vivienne Westwood, Roald Dahl, Howl’s Moving Castle, Harry Potter, Point Horror books, Community, Parks & Recreation (specifically Ron Swanson <3), Green Wing (90% of british comedy to be honest), True Blood, Men with Beards, Deftones & Clutch, Empire Records, Portal, Batman, Tattoos, Owls, Beyonce and Archer. I could keep going but that is just what springs to mind
What fictional pet would you love to have?
FIRTH: The Cheshire cat, he would make life so interesting.
FARQUHARSON: Calcifer from Howl’s Moving Castle.
FIRTH: I would take my ‘Two and a Half Men’ boxset, my personalized ‘Chloe in Wonderland’ book and Batman Arkham City. If I had to choose one, It would have to be ‘Two and a Half Men’ boxset, I never get tired of watching that show.
FARQUHARSON: Can I take Portal and Portal 2? Because they just about make up one full game (in length). I will take your silence as a yes, awesome. Next I would take The Killing Joke comic by Alan Moore and book….I would take House of Leaves by Mark Z. Danielewski as I may actually make it to the end of it if I was on a desert island (I have been trying for 10 years to make it to the end). Movie would have to be Howl’s Moving Castle and TV show would be Community.
What’s next for Fickle Queen?
FIRTH: Well, some go this way, and some go that way. But as for me, myself, personally, my ideas are endless, and also top secret; you shall have to keep your eyes peeled.
FARQUHARSON: Total world domination, a spot of light baking and many more awesome pop culture cameos!
Where can we find you in the internets?
FARQUHARSON: Well I am furiously working to try get our website finished so for now…
